Z.Z. Wei's quietly powerful images of the Pacific Northwest countryside are so complete in composition, in colour choice, and emotional value, many have attempted to label his paint-ings "regional". The fact is, Z.Z. is very international and it is exactly that experience which has allowed him to so fully comprehend the magnificence of the Pacific Northwest. Originally from China, he graduated from the Central Institute of Art and Design in Beijing in 1984. In 1989, he was invited by the Washington State Centennial Commission to participate in the Pacific Rim Cultural Connection Project, and later to an artist in residence position at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington.
