Krugerrand Coin History

The Krugerrand was introduced in 1967 as a vehicle for private ownership of gold. It was minted in a copper-gold alloy more durable than pure gold. Economic sanctions against South Africa for its policy of apartheid made the Krugerrand an illegal import in many Western countries during the 1970s and 1980s. It was in 1980 that the quarter ounce Krugerrand was first minted. During the 1970s the Krugerrand made up approximately 90% of the world's Bullion coin market.

The Krugerrand Coin

The name “Krugerrand” combines the unit of currency of South Africa, the Rand, with the last name of Paul Kruger, an important political and military personality in the former South African Republic; his face appears on one side of the coin.

On the reverse side is a springbok – a mid-sized antelope which is native to some regions of Africa. It is to South Africa, what the Eagle or Bison is to the United States or the Lion is to Great Britain.
